The itching that psoriasis lesions cause may affect your quality of life more than the physical appearance of them. Itching is one of the most common psoriasis symptoms and affects up to 90% of people with psoriasis.

The itching that psoriasis causes differ than the type of itch some other skin conditions bring about as a burning sensation often accompanies the psoriasis itch. Even though proper psoriasis care and treatment do lessen the severity of all symptoms and flare-ups, there are some things you can do to relieve the itch of psoriasis.

      Stress As a Trigger

Stress is a psoriasis trigger, causing flare-ups while making the symptoms more severe, including the itch.

Avoiding and coping with stress when you have psoriasis is of utmost importance.

Exercise: One of the best things you can do to relieve stress and consequently the itch of psoriasis is exercise regularly. Physical exercise promotes the release of endorphins, which gives you energy, elevates your mood and sleep quality, and lessens anxiety.

Meditation: Another excellent way to relieve stress and anxiety to manage psoriasis itching is to meditate. Meditation does not mean an elaborate regimen; it just means taking 10-15 minutes to relax, empty your mind, and relax. Breathing exercises and meditation again improve your sleep quality and relieve stress, which in turn alleviate your overall condition.

Tips to Relieve the Psoriasis Itch

      Moisturizing

One of the most vital steps in your daily regimen to manage the itching should be moisturizing as this helps with the dryness, itching by speeding up the healing process.

      Cold Compress & Showers

Contrary to popular belief, hot baths may not be great for your skin and may lead your skin to get drier and more irritated. Take cold or lukewarm showers, and whenever you experience itching or burning, apply a cold compress to affected areas for 5-10 minutes.

Use a Keratolytic Product for Flaking

There are Keratolytic products available that lessen excess skin cell growth and inhibit the plaques from building up flakes, so using one of these regularly is a good idea. If you can keep the scaling under control with a keratolytic, the itching will also easily lessen with over-the-counter ointments and lotions.

      Try Over-the-counter treatments

There are many FDA-approved medicines available to treat itching that contain hydrocortisone, calamine, benzocaine, and so on that may be effective for some people. However, some of these may cause further dryness.
